楚悼王——重用吴起变革之路
在公元前401年，楚悼王继位的当口，国内外局势已经与他的曾祖父楚惠王时代迥然不同。国外形势尤为显著变化，三晋已逐渐强大，而楚国则陷入一片困境。就在这时期的公元前400年，三晋联军在乘丘战役中击败了楚军，这不仅显示了三晋对楚国右翼的威胁，也揭示了他们削弱左翼、巩固自身地位的意图。
随后，在公元前393年的岁月里，楚国对韩国发动进攻，并成功夺取了负黍，这一胜利为楚国带来了短暂的喜讯。但这一成就并未持续太久。在接下来的公元前391年，那些联合起来的三晋力量再次出现，将大梁和榆关从楚军手中夺回。这两处战略要地丢失不仅削弱了国家实力，更是给予了一种无比压力的感受。面对这种形势下的危机，无奈之下， Chu King only had one choice: to seek the aid of Qin, offering them a substantial reward in exchange for their military assistance. This move not only weakened Chu's position but also further complicated its relationship with the other states.
In this difficult time, the king was deeply troubled by the lack of capable advisors who could help him tackle these challenges. The power struggle between three prominent families - 屈、景、昭 - had created a vacuum in effective governance and defense against external threats. Despite their influence and control over key positions, they were unable or unwilling to provide meaningful solutions to address the country's predicament.
The king yearned for wise counselors like those who served his ancestors and was determined to find someone who could share his burden. After years of searching, he finally met Wu Qi, an extraordinary strategist whose arrival was akin to divine intervention. With great fanfare and respect, Wu Qi was welcomed into court as a trusted advisor.
